Donation is a very personal decision and it is your choice whether or not you wish to become a donor.  On this page you will see all the choices available to you.

The NHS Organ Donor Register is a secure database that keeps a record of your organ donation decision. Once you register, your details will be added to the Register and, if it is your first time registering, you will receive a letter of confirmation.

The next step is up to you. Whatever you decide, please talk to your loved ones about your decision and that you would like this fulfilled. It can relieve them of the burden of having to make the decision at such a difficult time.

Becoming a donor after your death could help save the lives of up to nine people who are awaiting a life-saving transplant.

Note: withdrawing your name from the Organ Donor Register is not the same as recording a decision not to donate. You can only withdraw your details if you have previously recorded a decision.  If you withdraw, this means we will not hold any details about you or your preferences.

Check your registration

The best and easiest way to check if you’re on the NHS Organ Donor Register is to call the NHSBT Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23.

You will be asked to provide your full name and date of birth. If an entry is found, your details will be checked and updated where necessary, eg address, organ preference. If no entry is found, you will be given the option to register over the phone.

What happens if I don’t register?

Registering on the NHS Organ Donor Register is the best way you can be sure your organ donation decision will be carried out. Your registration is held on the central NHS database so healthcare professionals will know what your decision is and exactly what organs and/or tissue you want to donate.

Your family will always be consulted about whether you wanted to be an organ donor or not, and clinicians will never proceed with organ donation if your family or loved ones object. If you don’t sign the register, it will not necessarily prevent you from becoming a donor, but it could mean your decision will not be fulfilled. In the event of someone’s death, families give final consent for organ donation to take place, so whether you’ve signed the register or not, it’s very important to talk to your loved ones about what you want.
